The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) now has AMC 8 problem sets organized by solving strategy, with a solution file for each set. That makes them useful for a question many students face: when you read an unfamiliar problem, what should you try first? This guide explains the eight strategies in the MAA collection, lets you try five original interactive questions, and shows how to use the official worksheets without simply memorizing answers.

These are strategy-focused practice sets, not the 2026 AMC 8 contest paper. The MAA AMC 8 resource hub also points to content-focused sets. You can open a strategy below to find its worksheet and solutions on the MAA site.

Strategies 1–4: Reverse, Organize, and Test

1. Work Backwards.

If the problem gives a final result after several steps, undo the steps in reverse order. Reverse addition with subtraction and multiplication with division, then check forward.

2. Casework.

Split the possibilities into distinct cases when one rule changes with a choice, such as whether a number is even or odd. Make the cases complete and avoid counting one outcome twice.

3. Find a Pattern.

Look for a repeating cycle or a predictable change. Write several terms and verify the rule before extending it to a much larger position.

4. Guess and Check.

Start with a reasonable value, test every condition, and adjust systematically. Record what each test tells you so the method does not become random trial and error.

Strategies 5–8: Simplify, Structure, and Represent

5. Make an Ordered List.

Choose a consistent order for possibilities—for example, smallest first digit, then second digit. A clear listing rule helps you catch missing or repeated cases.

6. Solve a Simpler Problem.

Try a smaller number or a simpler version of the same setup. Identify what stays true, then explain why that observation applies to the original problem.

7. Use Symmetry.

Check whether a figure or arrangement can be reflected, rotated, or divided into equal parts. Symmetry can reduce the number of cases you need to calculate.

8. Write an Equation.

Give an unknown quantity a name and translate each relationship into mathematics. Define the variable clearly, solve, and test the answer against the wording.

Practice: Five AMC 8 Strategy Questions

Try these five original, AMC 8-style questions. Each page focuses on one of the strategies above. Choose an answer, select Check answer to see the explanation, then use Next to move on. Your choices stay visible if you go back.

How to Practice With Official Sets and Video Solutions

Choose one strategy.

Read its short description above, open the linked MAA worksheet, and solve a few questions before viewing the solution file. Note the clue that made you choose that method.

Review the decision, not just the answer.

After checking a solution, ask: Was there a more efficient first move? Did I overlook a case, pattern, or condition? Keep a one-line note for problems you missed.

For a full-paper example, watch this 2025 AMC 8 video walkthrough on YouTube. Pause before each solution and decide which first move you would try. This is an independent video, separate from the MAA strategy worksheets.

For shorter, question-by-question viewing, Po-Shen Loh’s 2026 AMC 8 solutions pair individual video explanations with written solutions. Choose one problem, try it first, then compare your approach with the video.

Mix strategies afterward.

A worksheet labeled “Use Symmetry” tells you the intended method in advance; a real AMC 8 problem does not. Try an unlabeled mix of problems later and decide independently which approach fits.

FAQs

No. The MAA presents them as AMC 8 problem sets organized by strategy, with separate solutions. Do not describe the worksheets as a released contest paper.

There is no required sequence. Start with a method that appears in problems you find difficult, then rotate through the others. The goal is to recognize useful approaches when the strategy is not named for you.

MAA resources establish the official problem-set collection. The interactive examples and practice advice are original AMC-8.org material; independent video explanations are credited separately in the article.
