Can You Take the AMC 8 Online in 2027? Digital Testing vs. At-Home Testing

The 2027 AMC 8 can be taken digitally at participating sites, but the official U.S. and Canadian competition cannot be taken remotely from home.

Both digital and paper exams require in-person supervision at an approved competition site. A website advertising “online registration” may simply let you book an in-person seat.

This guide explains the testing formats, registration steps, dates, fees, and score information. Families elsewhere should confirm arrangements with their country's AMC International partner.

Digital vs. Paper AMC 8: What Is the Difference?

Digital Testing Still Takes Place at a Competition Site

Digital administration means reading questions and entering answers through the MAA competition platform. The word “online” describes the delivery method, not permission to sit the exam anywhere. Current U.S./Canadian rules prohibit remote or internet proctoring.

Paper Testing Uses Printed Materials

In Print & Scan administration, the host supplies printed booklets and student-specific answer sheets, then scans the completed sheets. Both formats are official options; ask which your site offers.

Three Checks Before a Digital Exam

  • Confirm whether the site provides a device or expects you to bring one.

  • Try the official platform's practice competition to check your browser, navigation, and login arrangements.

  • Follow the proctor's timing and submit when instructed. The AMC 8 on-screen clock is a reference; it does not automatically submit your work.

How to Register for the 2027 AMC 8

Check Eligibility Before Booking

The MAA overview and Student Guide specify Grade 8 or below and under 15.5 on competition day. U.S./Canadian participation also has school-enrollment and attendance conditions. Ask your host about unusual cases, including an age-limit boundary. Our AMC 8 eligibility guide explains what to check.

Find a Site and Complete Four Steps

  1. Ask your school whether it is hosting the AMC 8. If not, consult MAA's public list of registered sites and contact nearby schools, universities, math circles, or learning centers.

  2. Confirm that the site accepts your student, has a seat, and offers a suitable date and format. A listing alone does not guarantee availability.

  3. Use the student's registration link supplied by the Competition Manager. Returning students should use their existing account; a parent or guardian completes consent.

  4. Submit the form and confirm the Competition Manager has approved the registration. Follow any separate seat-booking or payment instructions from the host.

The MAA AMC overview links to the current public site list. For a wider explanation, read our 2027 AMC 8 registration guide.

Outside the United States and Canada

Use the MAA AMC International directory to find the International Group Leader for your country of residence. Confirm local availability, procedures, and testing arrangements rather than assuming U.S. options apply.

2027 AMC 8 Dates, Deadlines, and Fees

Official Dates and Host Registration Deadlines

Date

What it means

October 28, 2026

Early-bird host registration; $55 site fee.

January 5, 2027

Regular host registration; $75. Final deadline for new Competition Managers.

January 14, 2027

Late host registration; $115. Returning Competition Managers only.

January 21–27, 2027

Competition Week; attend your host's scheduled session.

These are host registration deadlines, not a universal student sign-up deadline. A local site may close student registration earlier or fill its seats. MAA's registration deadlines are 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

What Will a Family Pay?

Confirm the student fee, payment process, and cancellation terms directly with the host. The $55, $75, and $115 amounts above are site-registration fees, not standard per-student charges. MAA also lists a $25 bundle of ten student licenses for hosts; that is not a promise of a $2.50 public seat.

AMC 8 Scores and Award Cutoffs: What Is Known?

A Score Is Different From an Award Cutoff

Your score records your performance; an award cutoff determines a particular year's recognition. Neither is an admission requirement for taking the AMC 8. As of October 22, 2026, the 2027 contest has not happened, so a claimed final 2027 award cutoff would be premature.

Use clearly dated historical results for context only. A previous year's award score is not a guaranteed target for the next competition. AMC 8 results also do not directly qualify students for AIME.

When Can Students See Their Results?

The current manager guide says digital score reports open to Competition Managers at 8 a.m. ET the day after Competition Week ends. Print & Scan reporting depends on uploaded sheets and validation. Students can view their own results in the Student Portal after scores are finalized, typically a few weeks after the competition.

Before test day, use AMC 8 past papers to identify strengths and gaps; an online practice score is not an official result.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 2027 AMC 8

No, under the current U.S. and Canadian rules. The competition must be supervised in person at the approved physical site. A parent watching at home or a video call does not replace this requirement.

Ask your Competition Manager. Sites decide which administration formats they offer; do not assume that booking a seat includes a choice. Confirm device arrangements before selecting a digital session.

You complete an MAA student registration form using a link supplied by an approved competition site. Families do not register as Competition Managers or buy a school's license bundle to obtain an individual seat.

No. Students may take the AMC 8 only once during Competition Week, even if different sites offer different dates or formats. Check whether your school has registered you before booking elsewhere.

No. A mock test helps you practice, but it does not produce an official MAA competition result or award. You can practice at home even though the official U.S./Canadian contest requires an approved in-person site.

No. AIME qualification comes from performance on the AMC 10 or AMC 12 under the applicable rules. You do not need an AMC 8 award to register for an age- and grade-appropriate AMC 10 or AMC 12.
